Astrology: Understanding Your North And South Nodes

spirituality, astrology

our personal lunar nodes

Each of us has a North and South Node in our Natal Chart.

Also known as our Lunar Nodes, they are mathematical points between the Sun and the Moon that are critical in Astrology. The Lunar Nodes are determined by mathematical points where the moon’s orbit crosses the “ecliptic”—the apparent path which the Sun takes around the earth. Our Lunar Nodes are associated with our past lives, karma and destiny. Our North Node by astrological sign and house represents the spiritual lessons you are meant to master in this life (rewriting of destiny). Our South Node represents the unresolved karma/lessons that buildup from the past (your unfinished business) as well as your talents that you are here to offer in this lifetime. In fact, our Lunar Nodes suggests the personal karmic imbalance that we have to work on in this life.

Think of your South Node as your familiarity, your comfort. Think of your North Node as the North Star; your mastery for this lifetime.

We look at our North Node as an internal compass to heal what our South Node has forgotten/neglected. The only way for this alignment to flow is when we balance and neutralize the qualities of both. The solution of the South Node is always the North Node. Our North and South Nodes always fall on opposite signs of each other on our natal charts but their polarities are necessary for our growth in this lifetime. For example, your North Node may be a Leo and your South Node will be in its opposite sign of Aquarius and so on. One will also notice that our North Node is never similar to our Sun Sign. Our Sun Sign sheds light on our identity and the unique traits of our true self. Our North Node, however, represents the growth of your soul.

The Lunar Nodes change every 18 months, you may notice friends around your age having similar Lunar Nodes as you and that basically means you have a similar soul mission in this life together. What is really interesting too is that because of the 18 month switch period, if you have a partner who is either 9-10 years of an age gap from you, you will notice that he/she has exact lunar nodes but of OPPOSITE placement from yours. ( Eg, your North Node in Capricorn and his/her North Node in Cancer) This is an especially powerful strong relationship because it represents that both of you have mastered what each other are meant to learn. It is always interesting to note an individual’s Lunar Nodes as it gives you an idea of the soul mission he/she is here for.

Interpreting our LUnar nodes

As most are aware, we have 12 astrological signs and 12 houses. Each astrological sign gives insights on our talents, flaws and experiences in life. Each of the houses is ruled by a sign and their home planet gives insights on the area of your personal life that comes in focus. It is important to consider our astrological sign as well as our house when we look at the signs of our Lunar Nodes. Below are the steps for interpreting your Lunar Nodes:

  • Begin by checking your natal chart here. Do note, you will need your date of birth and birth time for accuracy.

  • Next, look out for North Nodes/True Node or the sign in your natal chart. Next, look 180 degrees across and you will find what your South Node ☋ is.

  • The South Node may not be mentioned in some charts at all- so use the 180 degrees to guide you. Do take into account the house where both the North and South Nodes reside in too.

  • Write them all down and click here to read more on each Lunar Node placement as explained by Astrostyle. She explains it thoroughly in what you should embrace and release in this lifetime.

As explained earlier on, to align ourselves to our mission in this lifetime, we need to neutralize both traits of our Lunar Nodes. Think of appreciating and celebrating the traits of your South Nodes in the areas of your life (your house) but hold its energies in your life ever so lightly. In fact, perhaps you might have already shockingly recognized yourself out there with the South Node traits. Around the age of 30 will be the time we truly begin realizing these traits. Think of taking ownership of your North Node and cultivating it even more in the areas of your life (your house). To properly navigate your Lunar Nodes, I highly recommend Karen M Black’s explanation of it here. You can select your North Node and it will guide you accordingly. She has explained everything perfectly.

our collective’s soul lesson with Gemini/Sagittarius lunar nodes

On the 5th/6th of May last month, the Lunar Nodes shifted from Cancer/Capricorn to Gemini/Sagittarius.

To many astrologers, this is a highly anticipated cosmic event for the year of 2020 that will govern the second quarter of 2020. The Lunar Nodes shifts signs every 18 months and this represents our collective soul lessons. Likewise with the explanation of North and South Node above- since November 2018, we have been working on our collective soul lesson to embrace more North Node Cancer traits to heal our South Node Capricorn traits. A theme in the past 18 months from Nov 2018 till May 2020 may feel deeply like cultivating self-nourishment, self-care, balancing well-being and our health with our pursuits in career and personal life. These are all the individual work we needed to embrace for our collective soul lessons.

The Lunar Nodes shift to Gemini/Sagittarius will dictate our cosmic skies until January 2022. Gemini will occupy the North Node of the moon while Sagittarius will reside in the South Node of the moon. Understand that we all have soul lessons as an individual to master and as a collective too- hence this Gemini/Sagittarius shift in our current collective Lunar Nodes are going to affect us too. Both Gemini and Sagittarius rule knowledge and knowledge systems such as education, religion, customs or lifestyle.  The North Node in Gemini suggests new choices and growth, ambitious desires, communication, social energy and curiosity. In contrast, the South Node in Sagittarius unveils old, familiar issues in need of digesting, decomposing, harvesting, and release. We will also be seeing a new notion of the way we travel particularly long-distance travel. In short, embrace more Gemini like qualities and let go of any Sagittarius qualities that do not serve you anymore.

It can feel overwhelming when you know you can learn so much about yourself and if you believe; your mission in life. I am a South Node in Cancer 1st house and North Node in Capricorn 7th House. When I read about it, I was thoroughly overwhelmed at how true it was. The Lunar Nodes shifted in November 2018 to Capricorn/Cancer 2 years ago. Late 2018 was a terrible, difficult time for me and my North/South Nodes were also Capricorn/Cancer too, just at a reverse placement. To put it bluntly, it was a time of karmic rebalance I needed to go through. I needed to heal/release the nurturing, emotional, care-taker, creative side of me by embracing the business acumen, analytical, structure, professional side of me that is empowering others and not enabling anymore. This resonated with me so heavily and it is a balance of energies I will be working on this lifetime.

The reason why I love the realm of Karmic Astrology and Astrology is that it is a profound tool that you can use in self-discovery and in navigating the water of life. And if you look closely- there are always tips and tools that play out with the timings of your life events and planetary alignment with the cosmic skies.
